The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recently updated the label for a “first-of-a-kind” formulation of a drug that was marketed as Nexium (esomeprazole). The FDA is warning patients about the risk of developing stomach ulcers caused by Nexium (esomeprazole), and also about serious heart and kidney problems that might occur if Nexium is taken for more than six months. Nexium was first approved for use in pediatric patients over the age of two years, but a new prescription is being reviewed and approved for pediatric use, but there are concerns about Nexium’s safety in children. The FDA also reviewed Nexium’s potential side effects, including heart problems, high blood pressure and a kidney problem that may occur if Nexium is taken for more than six months.

Here’s what the FDA has to say about the new Nexium product:

  • The drug is not indicated for use in children under the age of two years, and the safety of this drug is not established.
  • The product has not been shown to cause serious side effects.
  • The safety of this drug is not established.
  • The product is being used by more than 200,000 children.
  • The drug is being marketed as a safe and effective drug that does not increase the risk of heart problems, high blood pressure and kidney problems in children, and that does not cause serious side effects.
  • The drug is being marketed for use in the treatment of a condition called hypercalcemia, which is a serious condition that may lead to the development of hypercalcemia.

The FDA is advising consumers to consult their doctor before purchasing Nexium or any other prescription drug. The drug label should include information about its potential serious effects and warnings about the potential risks of these side effects.

FDA Executive Director Anne Green

I was prescribed Nexium in 2007 for the rare disease that makes it difficult to get and keep an adequate amount of stomach acid for an entire 24 hours. I got a prescription in January 2008, which led me to a gastroenterologist who prescribed it for about two years, and I was prescribed Nexium for six months.

Nexium was originally developed as a drug to treat acid reflux disease. It was later found to be a safer and more effective way of treating heartburn and other stomach problems. However, it had serious side effects such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol that were not seen with other drugs that treat acid reflux disease. As a result, the FDA turned to Nexium as a drug to treat these conditions and began to review the risks and benefits of the drug.

The FDA is now warning consumers about the risks and side effects of this drug, including heart attack and stroke, high blood pressure and kidney problems in children, and the drug’s possible association with certain types of cancer. The FDA is also warning consumers to take a daily multivitamin to maintain the best possible levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid in the body.

The FDA has reviewed Nexium’s potential risks and benefits and is advising consumers to take this drug with food and drinks to avoid stomach upset. The warning label for Nexium may not include information about serious heart problems or heart attack.

The FDA also has received information about a rare condition called hypercalcemia. This condition is caused by a deficiency of certain proteins in the body that may be dangerous to your body. It is also a serious condition that can cause death. Symptoms of this condition include heartburn, stomach pain, bloating, indigestion and constipation. Hypercalcemia can cause serious illness in patients with certain conditions, such as liver cirrhosis, kidney failure and diabetes.
